Oy, with The Spririt Archive, vol. 9, this week, and The Shazam! Archive, vol. 3, last week, my collection has ballooned to 68 archives--59 if you don't count the Spirit line.

And with Plastic Man rounding the turn, and Christmas sales in the offing, my archive collection will be increasing by leaps and bounds, pushing the limits of available credit!

But they do look nice on my shelves.

December may bankrupt me.

Plas, THUNDER and SPIRIT plus I'll probably feel compelled to buy the JSA/JLA hardcover. Darn it!!

I don't think I've got 68 of these either.

28 plus the 8 Spirits for a total of 36.

68 is a monument more than a bookshelf!!

You might have to apply for historical site status!!

And that doesn't include the 9 Spirit, 2 Tor & 1 Mad which are on a shelf in a different bookcase! That's 86 total, I guess.

DC/Mad marketed themselves out of a potential archive buyer. Years and years ago Mad did some inserts of their original issues inside their mag--I have one or two of those. Then only a couple years ago they released magazine versions of their original issues. I bought those--went nice with all my EC reprints. So when the Mad archive came out, having just bought all those mags, it made no financial sense to buy the archive.

I have one shelf reserved for The Spirit Archive series. Right now I keep other books on that shelf (like A Contract with God), but as I get more Spirit volumes I shift those books to other shelves. At some point, I'll have to take up yet another shelf for The Spirit.

I have two shelves for the other archives. One shelf is ostensibly "Golden Age," while the other is supposed to be "Silver Age." But the number of GA archives in my collection is greater than the SA. And then there are volumes that aren't exactly GA or SA--World's Finest, Black Canary, ... So as I get more GA archives I have to shift the remainder down to the SA shelf (Greatest...Stories Ever Told books fill out the rest of this shelf).

Also I shelve according to chronology and character--thus all GA Superman volumes come before all GA Batman which come before Shazam! It was a coin toss as to whether GA Flash should come before or after Shazam! But I keep the Quality books out of order--generally shelving them after all the DC/Fawcett and before all the SA books--given that I expect both Plas and Blackhawk to continue on into the fifties.

Bill, what are the volumes on the bottom shelf, on the right? They all look like oversized slipcases.

The Authority slipcase is in another bookcase with some other non-DCU DC-published stuff like the Planetary books and Vertigo tpbs.

Bill and Chris..those collections are impressive. Bill I like your bookend.

I only have 37..then I have Tor 1 and GL/GA slipcase...

I have also recently discovered the Heroclix game... My wallet is severely hurting, and so are my monthly floppies.

I'm glad Marvel isn't committed to the Masterwork program....I have no intention of getting The Spirit, Batman or NTT volumes until all the rest are purchased. So at Christmas I'll have 26 more to go to catch up to where I want to be (if I don't purchase any off eBay). Catching up on
........................................

All Star 1,2
Atom 1
Batman 1,2
Black Canary 1
Blackhawk 1
Doom Patrol 1
Enemy Ace 1
GA Flash 1
Flash 1,2,3
GA Green Lantern 1
Green Lantern 1,2,3
Hawkman 1
JLA 1,2
Legion 1,2,3,4,5
Shazam 1,2,3
GA Starman 1
Supergirl 1
Superman 1,2,3
Action 1
Wonder Woman 1,2,3

Impressive Bill. It only serves to remind me that I need to rearange my room and get another bookcase to accomodate my growing Archive collection. Right now I'm using a short, deep, bookcase for my Archives, computer CDs, and binders of Golden Age comics. It works fine for the Golden Age binders, but it's not the best place to showcase Archives, as it really ends up obscuring the volumes. Sure, I could move them downstairs with my other comics, tpbs, etc., but I want them on display in here to show them off, and to have handy. What are the dementions of the shelves you use Bill? It looks about right. I want to get one that will be big enough for my collection to grow, even though that will take a while. (I currently have only 2 archives per month in my budget.)

Thanks, Bill. Proof that the HC versions of the Batman newspaper strip exist!

BTW, as of Friday, when I pick up the new Spirit volume, I will be at 36 Archives, 9 Spirits, 2 Tors, 1 Mad, 1 Authority, and 2 Masterworks. Plus dozens of HC graphic novels and non-Archive collections.

All my comic-related bookcases are in our house's smallest bedroom, which is refered to as the "Comic Room" even tho' all the comics are in long boxes on shelves in the basement. Since they are in a real room, we wanted the bookcases to look nice. I got nice, solid wood bookcases at an actual furniture store, not a department store. The kind of furniture that gets delivered and comes built. I wanted the solidness because a whole shelf of archives tends to sag in those particle board bookcases.

These bookcases are 68 inches tall and actually have four shelves (the fourth one has random junk on it and is below the three in the picture). I got ones with only four shelves rather than the standard five because I specifically went looking for ones which could handle the Monster Society of Evil slipcased book. Each shelf is about 30 inches wide and just over 10 inches deep. The bottom two shelves are about 15.5 inches tall and the top two are about 12.5 inches tall. I have four of these bookcases in that room, with the other three holding Marvel stuff, non-archive DC stuff, and stuff from other publishers. Gives me plenty of expansion room for the future.

Is this the comic book equivalent of size queeniness?

My wife calls it the "Cardboard Room".

Personally, I use the stackable folding three shelf units. Two stacked together provide five shelves just under 12" high and 26" wide and a open top shelf that I use for odd sized books.

Four in total hold all my Archives (only missing Blackhawk and Black Canary) and Masterworks with tons of room to spare for the rest of my books.

Mine's called the Comic Room, too, and it's in a room that was converted from a single-car garage long before we bought the house.

I build my own shelves, here as elsewhere in the house, using 1 x 10 pine, stained and running floor to ceiling, with tracks mounted on them that allow you to adjust the height of each shelf. It's a quick and easy way to build bookshelves.
Most of the books (comic book reprints, original GNs, and strip reprints) are on the long (16 feet with a 9-foot ceiling) outside wall of the room, which is entirely covered with shelves (except for the window). The art and illustration books and books about comics have been pushed out onto the short back wall of the room, which they share with about 40 short comic and magazine boxes, on the same kind of shelves (a 16-inch short box is pretty happy and secure on a 1 x 12 shelf).
The other long side wall of the room has two doors in it, and is otherwise occupied by long boxes containing the remains of my floppy collection--at this point consisting mostly of junk from the 80s and 90s that I haven't been able to liquidate yet. When that's gone, more proper shelves will go up and the comics will have to share the room with some overflow books from the rest of the house--probably mysteries, but maybe mythology and archaeology/anthro; not sure yet.
Thr front wall of the room is mostly window, so unsuited for shelves.

If I'm not mistaken (jjfriel on eBay, right?), some of your "liquidations" now happily reside in my collection thanks to eBay.

With an old 3 bedroom house (one of those being a finished section of the attic), I don't have the luxury of a "Comic Room." In my room, I have the small bookcase that I mentioned, and stacks of books everywhere that I either need to read, or have out for research (since this also is where I have my computer).

The main part of my collection is kept in my basement, which I guess could be called my comic book corner. They are in binders, on standard utility shelves, four of them tall and thin on one wall, and one long and short in the middle of the basement. In-between is a children's drawing table (a nice one rescued from a neighbor's garbage) that is just right to serve as a reading desk, and my downstairs "living room" (three chairs, an end table, a small bookcase displaying my action figures, and a TV). On top of the short shelf is my TPB collection, my Pure Excitement Comics CDs, a Superman cookie jar, and a box where I keep page covers to put my comics in. On the other side of it is my drawing table and a nice old typewriter stand that holds my art supplies, and can easily be slid out of the way. The rest of the basement is more or less a typical one, laundry area, pantry, storage, tools and workbenches, that sort of thing. All of it is unfinished, and likely will never be since the furnace ducts make for a low ceiling in places.
